Chapter 12

Skylar

I was so upset that Jack had dismissed me so easily when he’d known all along that it was just a fun romp. Could I really trust him to be that into me? And Japan would never work. He would sign that huge deal, and by the end of it, he’d have come to his senses, and I’d be in love.

I moved to the door so fast that I hadn’t even closed my robe all of the way when I threw the door open, forgetting my place.

My brother was standing at his own door, his mouth gaped open wide. “What the fuck is going on?” He looked down at my open robe and looked away. “Cover yourself, Skylar!”

I clenched my robe, and he stormed forward, going into the guest room before Jack could get his pants on. Jack turned around and put on his boxer briefs while I tried to get between him and my brother. “Stop it,” I said, trying to hold him back.

“It’s not what you think,” said Jack, turning around.

“It looks like you’ve been banging my sister!” He walked over and pushed Jack, who stumbled back against the bed. “Are you out of your fucking mind? I bring you here, and this is how you treat me and my family? You use my sister like one of your many whores, and you shit on our friendship!”

To hear that Jack had many other women wasn’t a shock, but to hear that my brother knew how Jack had treated most women made me realize how wrong I’d been to give myself to him.

“I like her, and I’m not sorry. I told you I wanted to settle down. You’re the one who laughed at me like it wasn’t possible.”

“So, you go and sleep with Skylar? Why? To prove a point? I should beat your ass.” Miles’s face was red, and I’d never seen him so angry in all of our life as brother and sister. He spun around as I tugged him back, and then he turned the anger on me. “And you, sleeping with my best friend and business partner. Who are you? Because you’re not the sister I thought you were.”

My heart broke into pieces just by the way he spoke to me, but the look in his eyes made me wonder if things would ever be the same between us.

“I’m sorry.” It was all I knew to say, but he didn’t seem to accept it.

“Save it.” He spun around and got back in Jack’s face. “I’m done with you. When we sign this deal, you can buy me out. I don’t want to be in business with someone I don’t trust.”

Jack held up his hands. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know you would feel this way.”

I felt like it was all my fault; I had let it happen even though I had known it was going to be a disaster. I had just thought it would be our little secret, but now I know that dirty little secrets have a way of coming out.
